European Year for Development 2015

On 10 July 2013, the European Commission published a communication on the Proposal for a Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council on the European Year of Development (2015) COM(2013) 509 final. This document officially proposed devoting 2015 to the development theme.

After the European Parliament had endorsed it by adopting of its position of 3 April 2014, the Council approved the EP position and adopted the proposal during its Foreign Affairs meeting on 14 and 15 April 2014.

Besides taking part in the informal interinstitutional working group on this subject since 2012, the Committee of the Regions supported this initiative in an opinion adopted in October 2012 and renewed its commitment on 9 October 2013 in a second opinion. This opinion highlighted the need for involvement in and appropriate support for local and regional authorities' initiatives.

A meeting organised at the CoR on 29 April 2014 and attended by the European Commission was intended to share information on implementing the 2015 initiative, European Year of Development (EY2015) and on the main stages ahead, as well as to hold discussions on local and regional authority involvement in this initiative.

As with all the European Years since 1983, the year when the concept was first introduced, the 2015 European Year will aim to raise the awareness of European citizens and national governments for the chosen theme, to stimulate discussion and change attitudes and behaviours.
