Pursuing the new Sustainable Development Goals at local level: towards more sustainable cities in the light of the forthcoming Habitat III conference
In September 2015 the UN General Assembly is expected to approve the “Sustainable Development Goals” for the period 2015 – 2030. In October 2016 will take place the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) and will focus on the implementation of a “New Urban Agenda” for sustainable urbanization in the next 20 years. Local authorities in the EU will play an important role in planning their cities' sustainability. They will also be mobilized to cooperate with their counterparts in third countries to support them in reaching the Goals in their respective cities. The workshop aims to explore the implications for cities of the new Goals, define the next steps to be taken in order to have common indicators to assess cities' sustainability and identify the EU funding instruments the LRA can use to achieve the Goals, in the light of the forthcoming Habitat III.
