'Wall of local and regional initiatives' is launched!
With the first note pinned by François Decoster, Mayor of Saint-Omer and Regional Councillor of Nord-Pas de Calais, Chair of the CoR CIVEX Committee, the 'Wall' was officially launched.

On 24 March, the Committee of the Regions (CoR) launched the 'Wall of local and regional initiatives' as one of its contributions to the European Year for Development 2015. Drown up in cooperation with DG Development and Cooperation, European Commission, this 'Wall' showcases the commitment of local and regional authorities in citizens awareness-raising regarding development cooperation. Throughout all of 2015, the notes of the awareness-raising initiatives will be pinned to the 'Wall' that is presented at the CoR premise as a 4m x 3m board showing the geographical map of Europe. An electronic version of the Wall will also be available on the Portal for Decentralized Cooperation.

Among the first notes pinned to the Wall are 6 pan-European initiatives implemented by subnational Authorities, through the Development Education and Awareness Raising (DEAR) Programme funded by the EC.

The inaugural guests to pin the initiatives were the representatives of European Regional authorities François Decoster, Mayor of Saint-Omer and Regional Councillor of Nord-Pas de Calais, Chair of the CoR CIVEX Committee and Joan Carles Garcia Cañizares, Deputy Councillor for Chairmanship and Councillor for Culture of Barcelona Provincial Council. Representatives of the EU institutions Rosario Bento Pais, Head of Unit for Civil Society and Local Authorities, DG Development and Cooperation, European Commission and Beatrix Immenkamp, Head of Unit of ARLEM, Decentralised Cooperation, Contact Group with the Council of Europe, Committee of the Regions have added various other notes to the Wall.

The Committee of the Regions is a partner in the European Year for Development (EYD) project.
 
Local and regional government play a big part in not only raising awareness among citizens of the importance of development aid, but also helping share knowledge to make aid more efficient and effective.
